| Tink | From The New LA Chronicle #27 LETTER TO THE EDITOR: MANNERS IN LA The following letter has been sent to us. Our policy is to publish letters unedited, but with the disclaimer that this represents the opinion of the writer, not necessarily our own. Please keep this in mind when sending enquiries about its content: ---- Dear LA, I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss an important matter with you. That matter is the issue of manners. I have observed that the lesser races of LA do not have a very good awareness of manners and their importance. I suppose for humans it is because of their short life span. I do find that dealing with them at times is like dealing with children, as their age would indicate. But such a thing is no excuse. By comparison, vampires--as represented by the Coven--have a very strong sense of manners. I know you may think this is because, like my people, they are much longer lived, however their leader, Shyann is only 70 years old; by the standards of my people, she is but an adolescent! And at such a young age she has been pregnant twice! Such a thing would be shameful among my people, but she still well understands and respects proper manners, even when in the midst of such a young pregnancy and experiencing emotional bouts. So clearly youth is not an excuse for poor manners. I also understand that for some races, manners are not inherent to their nature. My own Ra'en are possibly the pinnacle of manners and politeness among all races. By comparison, most cele--other elves and some fae--must work at being proper at all times. So I can imagine how much more difficult it must be for those closer to animals, such as the lycan and neko. However even then, while the two races are very comparable, neko are intelligent enough to recognize and follow some base level of politeness, sometimes better than humans! So clearly being of an animal nature is no excuse either. Now that you understand that manners can be employed by all races regardless of age or base nature, it is necessary that you understand the importance of manners. At their core, manners are important not only when dealing with your superiors, but also your equals and inferiors, as I frequently must do in this city. Manners show that you respect another being no matter what they might have the misfortune of being. Showing proper manners also gains respect for you and your species. It can also be an excellent way to assuage the anger of the more prideful species, or species that tend to overreact when they feel slighted, or species that tend to be both, such as vampires and demons! Frequently I have seen humans get into bad situations with vampires when a simple display of manners would have avoided a most distasteful and over-reactionary response. Fortunately, for all of the various species found in this city, the key to understanding manners is simple to grasp. Simply consider how the other would prefer to be treated. Next, imagine that the person you are dealing with is someone you do not even know. Imagine that, as the humans call it, you are 'creating a first impression'. Familiarity often leads to relaxed manners, but fight that urge! More important than the first impression, the last impression of you is what someone will carry from one encounter to the next. So always show proper deference when departing someone's presence. A simple expression of interest in seeing someone again is always appreciated, even if you cannot stand the one you are dealing with because you may find their own level of manners childish.
