| Jeanne Varun | She gasped, and then gasped again as he pulled her in close and his chin pushed her cheek around gently. They were both smiling just faintly, and she was frowning, too, as the inch between them melted into darkness. It came like this then, the curse of the undead. A brush of his fangs that made her heart swoon sickly, a sudden sharpness and then the woozy rush that gradually, gradually sharpened into a new, strange feeling, exotic in its darkness. A girl of 14 at the time of Armageddon, Jeanne was a true child of the post-apocalyptic world. Orphaned by the vampire wars, abandoned by fate, she weaved a shadowy existence through the backstreets of New York. Brought up in the slums that sprung up in the dark bowels of what was formally Manhattan, she could be found in various guises, stripper, prostitute, beggar, thief. The night she met him, was ordinary, not unlike any other. A visitor in from the west he said, although she knew no people who travelled towards the hellish vision that was now the city. Bored and callous, the vampire found her to be astonishing naive and fleetingly amusing. A blonde play thing before the next sunrise. He conferred upon her the embrace not out of fondness or desire, but merely a cold, nasty sense of humor. For he saw that here was a girl made of candy floss, light, ineffectual, utterly air-headed. To turn her undead and throw her out once again into the churning black of the war torn city would be too delicious an experiment to forgo. He held her so tight that her skin bruised. As the life drained from her, she felt herself reborn. Vampirism brought with it, a previously hidden metal in her, a sly viciousness, an almost reptilian cold bloodedness beneath the pallor. He was gone by morning, and in an ironic parody of those frivolous one night stands that now seem to belong solely to the realm of the sunny 20th century, she found herself truly alone. The sun streamed through the window, its radiance causing her to cry out in pain. It was during her brief incarceration in the motel room that she decided to head west to Lost Angel's. To what end? She was not so clear on that. Maybe somewhere in the expansive darkness she would find her sire, or maybe others of her kind. Maybe a purpose in the afterlife she had awoken to. At the station she closed her eyes, and flung herself onto the train, rushing through the darkness towards the heart of the city. It engulfed her, and she became another one of the myriad of souls that roam Lost Angel's, fumbling in the dark, scrabbling for redemption, crying out to the indifferent sky.
