| Justa Zero | Justa refilled the glass, and then drank it slowly this time. The memories continued to play in his head. She hadn’t arrived yet. She was so innocent, what was he doing here with her. His doubts crept into his mind again for the hundredth time. He had to stop it, stop it before she saw him for what he really was. Saw what he was capable of…….capable of doing…wanted to do. Age 10. The snow had fallen heavily again. It blanketed the farm and surrounding hills with a pure clean white. He wrapped up and called out “I’m going to play in the forest for a while.” He heard the woman call back “Be careful. They people in the city don’t trust you. You’re different than them, and they can’t understand that. They fear what they can’t understand. Just avoid them, ok?” He smiled. He become very good at avoiding the townfolk. His walk had become almost completely silent. He left few footprints. He didn’t talk. He had followed the owner of a nearby farm for 3 hours without him even knowing he was there. He opened the door. Outside the wind was picking up. He headed for the relative calm of the forest, the trees, even without their leaves breaking the wind, allowing some measure of relief. He walked on, looking from side to side as he went, watching for anything that might be a problem. He noted a trail in the snow. Someone had gone by here recently. Looking closer he noticed that there were two sets of tracks, on coming and one going. He looked up. Town was to the west, so he turned and followed the path to the east. Walking for sometime he felt a chill as the wind seeped through the trees to stab at him. I reminded him of something….three years ago…his house…the fire…the flesh and blood. He hadn’t known at the time what it was, but the family that had taken care of him had explained it. His parents had been sent to this plane to work on a mission. They met and prepared for battle, But they talked about what they were assigned to do….and realized that their purposes could work together. They teamed up and completed their mission. It had been successful. Too successful. They had fallen in love with each other. Momma and Poppa decided not to return. They shed their forms and took human form to blend in and hide. They still kept contacts on both planes, and knew that they’d been marked as traitors by both. They’d had a child…him. Only then did they find out that they were actively being sought out…by both sides. They had put him somewhere safe and face the onslaught sent by both heaven and hell. What he’d seen and only partially understood was that the bits of flesh and blood scattered around the house had been what was left of his mother and father…and not a few of their attackers. His eyes glowed briefly at the memory…It seemed to happen more these days. He followed the path to where it ended. A hunter had laid a trap to catch small animals foraging for food in the snow. A small rabbit was caught in the trap. He thought it was cute, and shouldn’t die for someone’s dinner. He reached down to stroke it, and noticed the drops of blood coming from where the trap had cut into its leg. He stroked it some more, watching it stop trembling and start to relax. Something in him stirred. He moved his other hand down as if to free it from the trap. He felt the stirring again. His hands moved to below the rabbit’s head and squeezed lightly. The rabbit began to shiver again, as if knowing what was going to happen. He squeezed harder. The rabbit struggled against him, trying to pull free. He felt his eyes begin to glow again…a feeling sweeping him. Power. He squeezed harder and harder feeling the rabbit struggle more and then stop. He felt the rush of exhilaration, almost sensual flood over him, his eyes glowing their brightest they had ever. The feeling…..he could feel the life slipping away….feel it’s animal soul being consumed by him……He suddenly released. The animal fell dead to the snowy ground. His eyes stopped glowing. He suddenly felt ashamed. But he remembered the rush, the power, the desire….. TBC | 12/19/08 18:26 |
