| Kit Ristow | Kit should be out drinking. Should be blitzed off her ass at the Zodiac Lounge, smelling of whiskey and beer and god-knows-what-else, dancing like a fool and letting Raven hold back her hair from her face. Or she should be celebrating with him, quiet and safe and happy. Opening presents. Eating cake. Instead, she's been alone in her bedroom for three days. Other than Raven and Cody, she's sure no one remembers her birthday--and neither of them will disturb this room. Cody has more respect than that. Raven has family business--and in the Otherworld, where she can't pass, where she will never pass--and she's not much for company right now, anyway. It doesn't matter. She can still feel the talisman in her hand. That's the horrible thing, the cruelty, the proof of how insidious glamour is and how fucked her own mind must be. Whatever had been given to her had been enchanted, bound, told to look like the thing she most desired. And so she would want it--thou shalt not covet--and take it--though shalt not steal--and make herself worthy. . . [i] . .thou shalt not kill.[/i] All the things she could have seen. All the things she could have wanted--[i]should[/i] have wanted--and her mind, her being, her soul had seen that. Seeing what would make her evil, would drag her to the dark, would bind her, would destroy, would make her whole. [i]". . .Sweeter than honey from the rock, Stronger than man-rejoicing wine, Clearer than water flowed that juice; She never tasted such before. . ."[/i] The lines from the old poem come to her without conscious bidding, and she makes a noise, throws her hands in the air. She knows the rest of the poem--she knows the story, she knows to taste is forbidden to taste is to be damned to taste is to cry to scream to die in agony to-- [i]". . .She sucked until her lips were sore; Then flung the emptied rinds away But gathered up one kernel stone, And knew not was it night or day As she turned home alone. . ."[/i] She lets the line finish--and it would have anyway, let it or not--then brings her hands up to cover her face, drags them through hair that hasn't been brushed, that hasn't been washed or tended to since she entered the bedroom. All the things she could have seen. Everything she could have wanted. Raven safe and whole and unburdened, the humans safe, fallen heroes brought back to life. . .and what her heart showed her. [i]M'aoire[/i]. His eyes dance in front of her, green and damning and laughing as she stares at the walls. [i]I'm not a hero[/i], she thinks, feeling her fingertips slide between strands of hair. [i]Not even good. Shouldn't be in the Guard.[/i] Her hand catches in a knot, and she yanks her hand viciously, forces it through and feels the sharp pain as a few stubborn strands are ripped from her scalp. [i]Shouldn't be [u]alive[/u].[/i] She pulls her hand away from her head and regards it, notes the black hair threading between her fingers and over her palm, then looks away, up at the doorway. Her sword lies across the threshold, sheathed, handle gleaming in the afternoon sunlight. She'll have to go out there. Back into the city. She could feel its heart humming, even from her apartment in Chinatown; there were so many lives there, so many temptations. [i]So many to kill or taste or take. . .[/i] But she won't. She has a choice, and she won't. There's another sound coming, one that might only be in her head. The sound of hounds baying and horses' hooves tearing up the ground in chase. It's close. She doesn't have to be strong for long. [i]"Besides. . ."[/i] Avris's voice echoes in her head, a long-forgotten memory. [i]". . .you always enjoyed this part."[/i] The sword is heavy in her hand as she picks it up. Accepts it. The poem again, loud and insistent. [i]". . .Twilight is not good for maidens. . ." | Missy | *Missy shivers as she comes to the end of the story, goose bumps rippling up and down her arms.* Seriously awesome writing Kit. But that is hardly surprising to me at this point. Your posts were ones I was always eager to read on the older forum site and that certainly hasn't changed on this newer site either. There are some characters in CoLA I feel honoured and priviledged to RP with and this piece of writing is a clear demonstration of why I hold you in such high regard.
