| Digital Enigma | Mal shifted the lid from the coffin. Oren had told him to stay put, but he was bored. By his calculations he had very little time left, and would need most of that just to get home. He sat up, becoming dizzy from the loss of blood. He may have lost his powers and become mortal again, but he could smell the blood still. It didn't smell right. It smelled of a dying mortal. He checked the back of his head, of course it was still bleeding. Checked his chest, still bleeding. Checked his mouth, still bleeding. He closed his eyes and thought to himself about the price to pay for a few days of cognitive thought. He hefted himself from the coffin slowly. He peered out the Margrave's office door. He couldn't see anybody. Not that his eyesight was all that good, it was rather blurred by the loss of blood. He made his way down the steps of the hotel, and out the back door. He slowly climbed down the stairs to the beach level. He dragged himself down the boardwalk to Kindred Bay. He spotted his wrecked shipping container. He struggled to open the door to his "home". It was all he had since members of the coven were unable to deal with him, so they often just sent him away. He crawled to the back, and jimmied open his secret compartment. He pulled a few papers from up his sleeve. He unfolded them. The top papers were task reports and report forms. He placed those in the compartment. The next few paper he looked at intensly. He didn't remember writing them, then again, he didn't remember much from his bouts of incoherence. The first was a crayon drawing of a female, dressed all in white. Scrawled nest to her were the words "She belives in you, lets do it for her". He folded this drawing and placed it in the compartment. The last page he held on to was also scrawled in crayon. It was an instruction sheet on how to get home, how to open the compartment, what his tasks were, and exactly what dire straights he was in as a dying mortal. He placed this last piece of paper in the compartment. He rummaged in the compartment for something, pulling out what looked like a small circular purple ball of lint. He closed the compartment and struggled to the beach. He found the reminants of a fire, which he worked back into a flame. He placed the purple ball in the flames. It erupted into a mass of purple smoke for a moment, then returned to it's normal fire smoke self. He sat near the fire, finally realizing how cold it was outside. It wasn't long before he heard footsteps behind him. He didn't even turn, he just spoke. "I suppose you're happy to see me like this." He snarled. "I'd prefer not to see you at all." The purple demoness replied. "What have you gotten yourself into this time?" He poked at the dying flames of the fire with a stick before responding "I never knew what comeradery was like. In my attempts to keep it I'm going to lose it." "That sounds par for the course for you." The demoness retorted. She spit into the fire, causing it to flare up. "You still haven't answered my question. My nose tells me you're mortal and you're dying." "Remember when that one person believed in you, so you took a risk and joined the Vanguard? I'm doing something similar, only not joining the Vanguard." Mal huddled closer to the fire. He was visibly shaking. "I believe that's called a leap of faith." "Whatever, I did it and it's backfired." "And you called me because?" "I don't want to die alone." The purple demoness turned sharply upon hearing this. She stared at him for a moment before replying "I'm not gonna coddle you or anything." "Just sit with me untill the end." "That I can do. Besides, it's hard to walk on sand in heels." Mal started to laugh, and ended up coughing up some blood. "It's because you're young." The purple demoness blurted out. "What is?" "Your inability to understand emotions. You sprang forth from my nightmares knowing only hate and anger. Maybe if you had properly existed before that, this wouldn't be an issue." "Guess we'll never know." "So, how much longer?" "I'm hoping to watch the sun rise." "And then?" "Then I hope my consiousness can make it back when I revive." The two sat in silence watching over the water as the sky turned from midnight blue to shades of orange and pink, culminating with the edge of the sun starting to peek over the horizon. Glints of silver and gold danced on the waves of the bay. Only when the sun fully broke over the horizon was the silence between the two broken. "See you on the flip side, Digi." "Untill next time, Mal." Mal's body rapidly turned to dust on the beach. A whirlwind formed, gathering his dust and spiraling it up into the sky. Digi stood and opened a portal. She turned, looking at the fire one last time. "Lucky bastard and your revival skills. Hope your dust reforms you in a garbage dump. Or something." She stepped into the portal.
