Orlok LectarWhat's the attitude and characteristics differences between an elf and dark elf (by whatever name they want) in CoLA's storyline? Do Sidhe and Dark Sidhe (or whatever they are called in CoLA) hate each other in general or are their relations strictly limited to individual opinions? The thing is in most fantasies Elves and Dark Elves don't get along so I feel this is a good question since the two seem to be fairly lumped together in CoLA.

Also, I was wondering what the general extent of technology-understanding is among the Sidhe. If you look at the story written for them in the map thread here in the Character Fiction forum they are opposed to the nature-destroying industrial growth Humans unleahsed upon the world, claiming this to be the reason the Sidhe were knocked off Earth to begin with. So it would only make sense that most Sidhe are generally opposed to technology, right? Or at least when it comes to technology they SHOULD be very clueless, right?

I realize people will probably not think nor want to RP their Sidhe characters to comply to anything mentioned here but I'm still curious about it.		10/29/09 04:08
Alissathere is no official fiction on drow or even sidhe (Sidhe includes drow btw) in cola, just like lycans nekos vampires demons or angels.

Kit RistowSidha are as open as anything else in CoLA. There were several people who even RP'd sidhe (using that word) before they became a CCS race (Isadora Vanalten was, AFAIK, the first; I was maybe the second or third). Llyr--who I miss horribly--did a good amount of fiction on the sidhe, though most of those posts were lost when the boards switched over to the new system. Winter Illios and I both did some, too; and I know SeanM Writer did a bit. There might've been others, too. These were all in a consistent vein with compatible backstory.

And, really, it has eff-all to do with what's in that area. But, thing is, that's the beauty of free-form RP; people can do whatever they want. Kit's about as far from elf/drow as you can get, but she's most assuredly sidhe.

How do I play her relationship to technology? She grew up here, and she's well familiar with it. She's not a whiz--she just uses it as necessary. It's not a big deal. I play her as being exceptionally sensitive to iron--she has a permanent problem with her shoulder because it was wounded with iron (a few times, but that's besides the point). But as for nature. . .well, she [i]likes[/i] it, but it's not the end-all and be-all for her.

But. . .again. Not the only story. There are a lot of people who play it as you posted in CoLA. If differences come up in RP, I personally just turn a blind eye. Everyone's got the right to do their own thing.		10/29/09 06:05

(I think it's mentioned on the first page with the [b]Col Din[/b] territory in east Canada) Still, I KNOW everyone's free NOT to follow it, but the question still came to mind. Honestly, I figured what the answer would be but I guess I was hoping for something different just for the sake of a different answer. My loss.

KoboldI think Drow is a Dungeons and Dragon term, the word being derived from a mythic troll.

The lack of a hard corp drow mythology in CoLa probably has something to do with the fact that CoLa is not D&D based. Suz seems to have left Sidhe open to the full interpretation of the word through all the various fairy myths and not just the more recent RP understanding as fed to us by D&D.		10/29/09 17:43

Right, but Sidhe isn't limited to elves but rather the full range of fae creatures, at least as described in the character creation screen, as such dark elves would be a part of it I suppose but most "drow" or "dark elves" have a certain mythology that is created by modern authors to justify their existence. So in Cola without a direct "fall form grace" back story dark sidhe would just be sidhe who are out of lines with the racial norms.
Perhaps if you are looking for more mythological examples the Unseelie Court is a good starting point

In most european lore there wasn't just "elves" but a collection of fae creatures that included everything from the Sidhe, an elf like race that I believe white wolf put as the "rulers" of the Seelie court in its product line to Banshees (bean sídhe) and Cat faieries, goblins ...kobolds.troll like creatures..pixies were all thrown into the Seelie court mythology from time to time. Another word for Sidhe is Sith...which is also a race of dark force users who try to take over a galaxy far far away a long time ago but are defeated by Luke Skywalker.

Again I think the character creation screen more correctly describes the fae in its entirety.		10/29/09 18:03
Alissayeah, LA seems way more WoD then DnD (Although it got rid of the whole secret sociaties part, but secret sociaty freeform rp would never work, too many stupid people/ metagaming around for it to work.)

and yes Sidhe mostly covers fae and such with a broad stroke, just as with risen cyborg demons and angels.		10/29/09 18:15
Winter[center]With regard to Llyr's stories, I think I have a link for them, but as i'm at work, i cant access it. i'll have to try and see if i can locate it at home. Those stories form the basis for much of the 'sidhe lore' that some of us older players who have rp'd being sidhe before the race came into existence CCS-wise, have used.

On another front, lets look beyond WW/Changeling and into the actual mythos. "sidhe" are the people of ancient Ireland. I would highly recommend reading Gods and Fighting Men by Lady Gregory as a good example. [url]http://www.luminarium.org/mythology/ireland/[/url] In the mythos, there were several invasions of the island the sidhe were one, they were known as the Tuatha de Danu or Children of Dana and were followed by the Milesians. It was only later that 'man' gave them the categories of Seelie and Unseelie depending on how they behaved towards mortals.

Elves, in the modern concept I attribute to the Tolkein cycles and Drow from as it has been said, DnD and modern authors though if i remember correctly, if you dig into Norse myth you can find references to Svart Aelfheim which refers to the land of the Dark Elves, but in this case i believe its more of a matter of them being elves or some sort of fae that were metalworkers, miners and the like.

CCS Wise, as we've been told, the race, Sidhe, encompasses all of this and more and that is the beauty of free form rp and Cola specifically as with Wormwood happening, it ripped the verses apart so that we can exist side by side. Personally, Winter is the daughter of Lugh Lamfada who was a king of the Sidhe. I based Winter's background heavily on Llyr's writings, with his permission. Of course, winter is prideful and arrogant, she is royal sidhe and she is better than lower fae such as trolls, fairies, pixies, nymphs, ogres etc. does that stop her from interacting with other 'sidhe'? No of course not, though she may look down her nose at them at time.

AntiZeroThe Drow, or trow as the Scots called them during the Dark Ages, were traditionally metal crafting people who lived in caves. Hence, they shared similiarites of The People Under the Hills, or the Sidhe(broad term). Most drow "mythology" was iconicized by DND in the 70s with spider worship, cheesecake females, and male slaves living in the Underdark. For better or for worse, that's probally the only angle most people have info of the drow. It's up the the player really. I use the Sidhe-specifically the Umbra Sidhe(Dark Elves)- in a traditional format with my stories, but you could incorporate it either way.10/30/09 03:43
RuneCrimsonAlright I don't have to much to say but my faction The Daoine is based off the old style Irish Sidhe....yes we have a mix of RP going inside the group the typical Sidhe...the fae's...and yes some Drow....So in my opinion I believe that CCS is open for anything these days...look at the mix of Vampire and Neko...Lycan and Vampire ect. What is to say we cannot have such stories in our groups....but if you want true Sidhe History read the Book of Invasions.
